Another Classic! We have been putting off reading this book for a few years. it is very long. A few of us had read this before and it had not lived up to the original reading, but to new readers it was a delight. This story was full of wonderful world building and interesting characters and a plot that is engaging and well paced. We cared about these characters and enjoyed this story over all.

Chimera Review of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution.

This classic was well received. Though we have issues with the author we generally enjoyed this book and felt it was this book was well written and paced. There were however issues with the character development and treatment. It was clear the messages the author was creating with each of the characters and the commentary that was being made.

Chimera Review of Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution.

Pure high fantasy that hit all the troupe you could think of. This book was about fate and karma and reincarnation and the underlining story was interesting. If you are good at keeping track of characters and changing narratives this book will be enjoyable. The writing is good and the pace is decent. If you enjoy a good moral story, this book will be one to indulge.

Chimera Review of The Neverending Story

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution.

The expectations were not super high for this read. Many of us didn’t really enjoy the movie. It turns out that just the first half of this book is the movie, and honestly that should have been the end of the book. Pacing issues, unlikeable characters and generally too much book for it’s own good, this was indeed a neverending story and not in the unique way the author means it.

Chimera Review of Legend by David Gemmell

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution.

If this book had not been part of the theme this month not sure it would have been on any of our radars. Despite this being a “classic” Its a book of its time and really hasn’t aged well. Its full of the same tropes, that might have been invented at the writing of this book. It felt very rote. You had your feisty women, noble sages, and would be warrior with a small problem. This is what The Princes Bride was parodying. If you like war books and espionage with a side of romances that don’t make sense, you will enjoy.

Chimera Review of The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläinen

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution.

This is a book full of mystery! Easy to read but you have to keep a keen eye out for clues to understand it. The author allows us the privilege to come up with our own conclusions but gives us enough to make a satisfying story. Would love to chat with the author, his mind is so creative! You do have to be in the mood for the mystery though, its not plainly laid out.

Chimera Review of The 13½ Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution. Imaginative story and characters and fun read. This would good for bed time stories, very creative perhaps too creative for its own good. There were good creative plots and everything paid off by the end of the book. We have started our 9th year of this book club and we are still going strong. If you made a resolution to read more please join us!

Chimera Review of Ball Lightning by Cixin Liu

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution. SCIENCE! The book has a slow start and it can drag a bit if you are not interested in a science lesson. Its slow moving until the final few chapters when very big things happen have fast. The characters are mostly developed, though some leave much to be desired. This book describes PTSD and how people deal with it in a variety of ways. It also details how different cultures, personalities and personas deal with war and the aftermath of it. Chimera Review of The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

We rate books based on if we would recommend them, as related to the theme, and how much we enjoyed them based on the following criteria: Ease of read, plot, writing, and resolution. Did you catch “The Witcher” on Netflix in December 2019? This book is part of the series that that show is based on. Starting in the middle of the story this is a book when you have to pay attention. Good world building and character development this has hints of fairy tale retelling, magic explanation and magical creatures both good and bad. This was a well told story that comes together at the culmination and makes your ready to continue the journey with the main character.
